About the Drink

The quintessential Rye Cocktail, except in Minnesota and Wisconsin, where they prefer Brandy Manhattans, or down South where Bourbon Manhattans are the choice.

Legend has it that in 1886 a bartender at the Manhattan Club created the Manhattan when Jenny Churchill (mother of Winston) threw a party for her father's friend, Governor Tilden, just after he was elected governor of New York. The legend has recently been called into question by noted Cocktail historian David Wondrich who discovered that Mrs Churchill was busy in England on the date of Tilden's party giving birth to young Winston! - Dale DeGroff
